We are really having fun with the All-Clad 99009 Stainless Steel 6 1 / 2 Quart Slow Cooker.  Even as summer rolls around and stews, soups, etc are not necessarily ‘in’, the Slow Cooker still finds use on warm days as it does a fantastic job of containing heat.  Also the handles are not scalding hot so it is easy to move around with.

The 6 and a half Quart size provides more than enough room.  We have fit over 6 pounds of meat into this thing and it heats / cooks evenly, an important feature for a slow cooking mechanism. Most rival slow cookers just cook too fast, ironic enough considering these are supposed to be slow cooker machines.

One thing that was a hassle with our older cheaper slow cooker / crockpot was that we could not use it when we were gone for a period of time.  With the AllClad 99009 Slow Cooker it automatically turns to ‘warm’ after it is finished, so if you are at work and want dinner ready you can have it cooked and then stay warm until you get home.  This has helped many times when we were running late and did not full rushed considering it would stay home.

One common mistake with the KitchenAid KFP750 Processor is people think they can use it as a blender and fill it up with liquids.  A small amount of liquids are doable especially if there is some bulk food inside at the same time to absorb some of the liquid, but yes this will cause a mess if you fill it up with liquids and blend.

A slow cooker makes a huge difference if you lack the time on some days to cook. Slow-cooking foods allows that taste and flavor to seep in over time. Best yet they are convenient; you only need to use / clean this one device, and the heat stays within the slow cooker / crock pot.

In 2005 we bought the KitchenAid KSC700SS 7-quart slow-cooker for around 110$ on eBay. Maybe the most enticing feature is that you can set the KSC700 to ‘warm’ mode if it goes over the cooking time on the digital counter. This helps you if you are running late as it’ll automatically keep it warm for a few hours. This is a huge 7-quart slow cooker so yes it is heavy, but you are not going to find one that big that is light. Also since it is built well you get an evenly cooked recipe inside the slow cooker. The handles and machine stay warm on the outside and do a fantastic job of sealing the heat and steam on the top.

When using a KitchenAid Slow Cooker (or any slow-cooker) you will want to cut up the meat / vegetables before you put them in there. Also make sure you do not throw frozen meat in – you’ll want this to be close to thawed before you begin the operation. It is best to heat the slow cooker up very high at first and then turn it down to let the slow cooking process begin.

If you are looking for a smaller slow cooker for just yourself or a small family, the Cuisinart CSC-400 4 quart slow cooker is probably your best fit. One thing to keep in mind about the Cuisinart units (the 6.5 quart cuisinart cooker also) is that they heat up and cook recipes a little faster than usual. Like the KitchenAid slow cookers, you can hit the ‘hold’ button to ensure your food stays warm even after it’s done cooking. The Cuisinart CSC-400 has carrying handles and the retractable cord adds to the convenience. Amazon has a nice deal on the Cuisinart PSC-400 also, being 74$ when it is normally 150$!

For general use at home, a KitchenAid KSB560 or KitchenAid Professional KPCB348PNP makes the most sense.  With the multiple blender speeds you can start off slow and ease into the faster speeds like Puree to ensure no icecubes are left or fruit chunks.  KitchenAid blades are deadly sharp and as you can see are designed to throw the food up like a vortex with the blade facing upwards, making sure every part is blended.  The power of the motor is evidenced by house heavy the machine is.  I’ve found in the past that cheaper blenders are always guilty of either not blending all the solid stuff all the way or it taking several minutes of blender use to do so.

With these type of power and performance you want it working this way all the time.  Fortunately it’s easy to maintain by cleaning it right after making your concoction; just fill it halfway up with water and some dish soap, and then put it on puree it to wash the entire blender.  KitchenAid is friendly and provides great service should you have questions, and are very up front about taking care of their customers should something happen.

As an owner of the KitchenAid 5-Quart Stand Mixer KSM150PSWH, the real value I see is being able to make your own bread.  We are always eating pizza but now we can make our own pizza dough and save so much money buying ingredients / toppings in bulk now.  These are powerful motors yet remarkably quiet.  The Artisan Mixers themselves are extremely heavy – which is normal for KitchenAid since they are well-built.

As an alternate to the KitchenAid Stand Mixers, Cuisinart has released some of their own.   Cuisinart mixers are plastic so they are lighter than the KitchenAid brand and a bit nosier.  BUT, some Cuisinart Mixers like the Cuisinart SM-55BC 12-speed stand mixer actually provide more power than the standard KitchenAid Artisan Mixers and some nifty features like a splash guard.  Amazingly you can buy Cuisinart SM-55BC 12 speed mixers for over 300$ off at Amazon, plus FREE SHIPPING for a total of 315$ (normally 685$).

KitchenAid does provide the option for a stronger mixer with more capacity than the 5 quart.  The 6 quart KitchenAid KP26M1X 600 Professional Series Mixer is 33% off at Amazon including free shipping and 30 dollar kitchenaid rebate.  This thing handles dough (especially larger amounts of it) substantially easier than the kitchenaid artisan mixer.  As with any stand mixer though make sure not to put in too much high gluten bread flour or you will be sending it back in.
